Al-Fashir: On Sunday, January 26, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported a deadly attack on a hospital in the besieged city of Al-Fashir in western Sudan, resulting in 70 deaths.
The WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, shared on social media platform X that 19 others were injured in the attack. He noted that the hospital was full of patients at the time of the incident.
Saudi Arabia condemned the assault in a statement, describing it as a violation of international and humanitarian laws. The kingdom also emphasized the need to protect medical and humanitarian workers and called for an end to attacks on civilian targets.
The conflict in Sudan has been ongoing since April 15, 2023, following disputes between Sudan's military leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and his deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The disputes arose over the political future of Sudan and the integration of RSF into the national army.
It remains unclear which side was responsible for the attack.
The RSF has laid siege to Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur, since May 2023, but it has yet to take full control of the area.
The conflict in Sudan has caused tens of thousands of deaths and displaced over 12 million people. In some regions, particularly in the west and south, famine has devastated communities, forcing some families to eat grass to survive.
